Hidden Lowry masterpiece expected to fetch £1m
23/08/2007
A fairground painting by Salford's most famous painter has been unearthed after fifty years and is set to be auctioned at Sotheby's in December.
A representation of the work, which was painted by L S Lowry in 1938, has never been published and is barely known outside of the art world.
Known as The Fairground, the painting of a fair in Beswick, east Manchester has been hidden in a private collection for 57 year and is worth around £1 million.
James Rawlin, head of 20th-century British art at Sothebys, told the Times: "A Fairground is a superb example of Lowry at his very best and the work has all of the crucial attributes of quality, fine condition and an impeccable, unbroken provenance.
"The 1930s was a decade when Lowry honed his style into that which has made him one of Britains most collected artists."
In June, a bidder paid £3.7 million for Lowry's Good Friday, Daisy Nook, making it the most expensive Lowry painting ever sold.
