Historic market hall gets lottery funding
13/12/2006
A Greater Manchester market hall has been awarded nearly £1 million so that it can be restored and refurbished, it has emerged.
Repairs to the 19th century covered market hall in Stockport will now be possible thanks to a £999,000 Heritage Lottery grant.
The money will be used in a variety of ways, with improved wheelchair access, new food and cafe units and a better heating and ventilation system among the possibilities.
Julien Lewis, president of the Stockport branch of the National Market Traders Federation, said: "This news is a fantastic early Christmas present for all traders on Stockport Market.
"The refurbishment of the Covered Market Hall – the 'jewel in the crown' of the Market Place – will complete the regeneration process of building works that started over five years ago."
According to Stockport Council, the market hall was built as an open-sided cast-iron shelter in 1861 and played a vital role in establishing Stockport Market as one of the most influential in the north-west.
