Historical gems under threat says English Heritage

A number of "historical gems" in Greater Manchester are under threat from decay and neglect, according to a new report by English Heritage.

The national survey has found 25 sites at risk in the city-region, including the former Police and Fire Station on London Road in Manchester.

Its Baroque revival architecture, with Mannerist sculptures and Accrington brick and terracotta, is a tour de force of Edwardian architecture, says English Heritage.

Henry Owen-John, from English Heritage, said: "It is crucial that sites such as London Road Police and Fire Station in Manchester are preserved for future generations."

The study found that one in 14 registered parks, gardens and landscapes throughout the UK is at high risk and the same can be said for one in 30 Grade I and II buildings.

Ancoats, widely regarded as the world's first industrial suburb, has one of the largest concentrations of Grade II-listed building in Manchester.
