Hospital boost for Manchester
18/08/2006
Greater Manchester is set to benefit from major new hospital developments, following a government decision to allow £1.5 billion of Private Finance Initiatives (PFI).
Salford Royal Hospitals NHS Trust will receive a £112 million new hospital, which will contain extra single-rooms, operating theatres and enhanced accident and emergency facilities.
Additionally, Tameside and Glossop Acute Services NHS Trust will benefit from a £68 million investment, which includes the installation of new wards and a day hospital for the mentally ill.
Further developments will occur in hospitals in north Staffordshire, south Devon and Leicester.
Health minister Andy Burnham said: "Each scheme has been rigorously checked to make sure that it offers value for money and delivers services that are needed by local patients."
"This is great news for the hundreds of thousands of patients who will benefit from the modern, bright new buildings," he added.
