It's all kicking off in Exchange Square
09/06/2006
Manchester's Exchange Square kicks off its World Cup coverage today, showing the first of many tournament games.
Host nation Germany take on Costa Rica in the football showpiece's opening game and Manchester residents will be able to watch the match on the square's giant BBC screen.
However, bigger crowds are expected for Saturday afternoon, as England play Paraguay in their first match of the tournament.
All of England's games that are scheduled for the BBC will be shown in the square, as well as any other match the broadcast company is planning to cover.
Councillor Pat Karney of Manchester City Council, said: "There's always been a great atmosphere in the square during this kind of event, where people are able to share their enthusiasm and really get into the spirit of the competition.
"The chance to watch with family or friends in the square compliments the other ways to enjoy the World Cup watching in bars or pubs or at home."
Some of the matches to be shown over the coming week include Serbia & Montenegro vs Netherlands and Italy vs Ghana, on Sunday and Monday respectively.
