Jail for mother of fake children
20/02/2008
A woman from the Crumpsall area of Manchester has been given a 12 month jail sentence after being found guilty of tax credit fraud.
Caockmari Omoike fell foul of the law after investigators from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), working alongside officials from Salford city council, discovered she had been claiming for 18 non existent children.
The Swedish citizen made the claims using two different names from two separate addresses and is believed to have gained almost £24,000 from her fraudulent activities.
In addition to imposing a custodial punishment, the judge at Manchester crown court ordered that Ms Omoike be deported at the end of her sentence.
Joanne Pennington of HMRC praised the efforts of Salford city council and the police in bringing Ms Omoike to justice.
She added: "Those who think that they can beat the system, and gain an advantage over everyone else without consideration or second thought should be worried. HMRC will seek them out with determination and persistence."
In December 2007, a woman from Irlam was jailed for ten months after making fraudulent benefit claims for a fictitious family of seven children.
