Jodrell Bank professor remains hopeful
11/07/2008
Professor Phil Diamond, the director of Jodrell Bank, has said the Cheshire observatory is in a good position to secure funding for the long-term.
He was speaking after it was reported that Jodrell Bank has been saved from closure at least for the next three years.
The Science and Technology Facilities Council has agreed to restore funding for a key research project known as e-Merlin and this means the facility is secure for the medium term.
Professor Diamond told the Times that the immediate funding problem had been solved but there is still more to be done.
"It puts us in a good position to discuss and plan for the longer term hopefully without any funding crises on the horizon," he stated.
The e-Merlin project consists of two telescopes at Jodrell Bank, as well as dishes in Cheshire and other parts of the country.
Jodrell Bank is owned by the University of Manchester.
