Jodrell Bank tops northern landmark poll
25/08/2006
The University of Manchester's astronomy observatory Jodrell Bank has been selected as a finalist in an online BBC competition to find the UK's best unsung landmark.
According to the BBC, Jodrell Bank is the favourite landmark in the northern half of the UK.
The radio astronomy observatory, which is part of the university's school of physics and astronomy, will now go up against other regional victors in the next round to find the national winner.
Dr Tim O'Brien, a Jodrell Bank Astronomer, told the university: "We're known worldwide for our scientific research into space and the universe and we're really proud that people recognise us as a key part of the landscape of the planet too."
Cheshire resident Steve Jones, who voted for Jodrell Bank, told the BBC that Jodrell Bank stirs the imagination and "takes you back to when space exploration was very new".
Other popular northern landmarks that were beaten by the observatory include the Tees Transporter Bridge and the Necropolis in Glasgow.
