Jowell optimistic about BBC move to Salford
19/12/2006
Culture secretary Tessa Jowell has said that the BBC should continue with plans to bring several departments, including Five Live and sport, to Greater Manchester.
She told the House of Commons that the forthcoming license fee announcement – on which the transfer depends – will reflect the government's belief that the move should happen.
Last week, the BBC board of governors approved plans to move some departments to Salford Quays.
"The government will ensure that the structure of the licence fee settlement makes clear that the move to the north-west will happen," Ms Jowell told MPs.
"More details will be given as part of the announcement on the level of the licence fee which I will make in the new year."
Felicity Goodey, the chief executive of the media city development at the quays, told the Salford Advertiser that she was adamant the BBC transfer would happen, especially as property firm Peel Holdings had invested so much money into the project.
