King's Regiment goes marching on

30/06/2006

A marching band will descend on Ashton-under-Lyne, in Tameside, Greater Manchester, this afternoon.

The King's Regiment band is parading for one last time before merging with two other north-west regiments, reports the BBC.

Ashton's market square is the venue for the final parade, following the regiment's march through the town centre.

Anyone wishing to view the event should make their way to St Michaels for 14:30 BST, where the march will begin.

Bayonets will be fixed, as the band exercises its freedom of Tameside, which was granted to them in 1994.

It was also admitted to the Roll of Honorary Freeman for Ashton in 1950.

From Saturday, the King's Own Royal Border Regiment and the Queens of Lancashire will be merged with King's, to form the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment.

The new alliance will arrive in Lancaster on Saturday July 1st and proceed on a march through the city, as the combined troops are inaugurated as Freemen of Lancaster.
