LAPD officer praises GMP in Moss Side
28/02/2007
Following two shootings in Manchester, a visiting Los Angeles police officer has praised the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and its links with the Moss Side and Longsight communities.
As part of fifth anniversary of Manchester Peace Week, Lieutenant Brian Gilman is one of two visitors from LA who met with children at schools and community groups in the city.
Lt Gilman is also meeting police offers to share their respective experiences of gang culture, the BBC has reported.
"The collaboration between the GMP and the community is just a marvel, it is fantastic," said Lt Gilman.
"We have done the same thing to a degree in Los Angeles and I think with some success. But LA is a city of 460 sq m and almost four million people and it's extremely diverse."
The Community Alliance for Renewal Inner South Manchester Area, which organises Peace Week, has said there will no march this year but it will run a series of events designed to drive home the anti-violence message.
Lt Gilman's comments follow a visit by prime minister Tony Blair last week, who met with community workers and former gang members in Moss Side and Hulme, while Conservative leader David Cameron visited Wythenshawe to find out more about a local project for boys.
