LCCC staying put at Old Trafford
17/05/2006
Lancashire County Cricket Club (LCCC) will remain at their Old Trafford ground, it has been announced.
The club plans to stay at the venue, which has been their home for 141 years, subject to Trafford Borough Council's approving a redevelopment programme.
LCCC had been contemplating a move in order to find more modern facilities, with sites at east-Manchester and Wigan coming under consideration.
Plans are now afoot to redevelop the current Old Trafford ground and surrounding areas into a "world class" stadium.
Michael Cairns, the chairman of the club's business committee, said: "It is a stunning opportunity for us to get it right - we want to be the capital of cricket outside [of] Lord's.
"The re-development scheme would incorporate land owned by the council, including the town hall site. Funding will come out of the development and property gains and also from other possible partners such as the North-West Development Agency and Sport England."
Current England stand-in captain and Lancashire player, Andrew Flintoff, has given his backing to the plans, telling the club's website: "It is fantastic news that the club is staying at Old Trafford."
