Labour security documents found in hotel
25/05/2006
Genuine security plans for the Labour Party's autumn conference have been found in a Manchester hotel.
Documents found in the Midland Hotel highlighted ways in which terrorists may try to kill prime minister Tony Blair at this year's conference, which is being held at the G-Mex Centre.
The dossier includes a list of "attack scenarios", such as a car bomb, a mortar attack and the use of rocket propelled grenades.
July 7th-style suicide bombers were also mentioned as a possible means of attack on Tony Blair and other senior politicians.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said: "Much of this information was either already in the public domain or certainly would have been in the run up to the conference.
"There is no intelligence to suggest that this event is a specific target for terrorists. However, we are conscious of the fact that the city has been targeted in the past."
A GMP spokesman described the papers as "pretty innocuous".
Earlier this year, it was announced Manchester would hold the Labour Party conference for the first time since 1917.
