Leave cars at home this Christmas, say transport chiefs
12/12/2007
Manchester transport chiefs have called on the public to leave their cars at home this Christmas and to use public transport.
The Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) has been displaying posters and leaflets at bus and train stations throughout the city-region, reports the Bolton News.
Bus operators First, Arriva, Stagecoach, Bluebird and JP Travel have all agreed to provide services on Boxing Day, while Metrolink services will run until 01:00 GMT on New Year's Eve.
Michael Renshaw, GMPTE's interim service director, told the newspaper: "I'm pleased that buses will run to all major towns in Greater Manchester on Boxing Day and that we've been able to provide Metrolink services well past midnight on New Year's Eve.
"The roads can get very congested over the festive season so using public transport is a good way of avoiding the queues."
In related news, bus operator Arriva has just invested £1 million in ten new vehicles for its 13 services in Eccles.
