Levenshulme woman who destroyed foetus spared jail
25/05/2007
A woman from Manchester has been spared prison after she was convicted of killing her seven month-old unborn child and refusing to provide an accurate account of what happened.
Maisha Ahmed Mohamed, 22, from Levenshulme, originally said she had suffered a miscarriage but then told detectives the baby was stillborn and was placed in a bin.
And in another version of events, she told police she had slipped in the shower.
The police, who believe this is the first time anyone has been sentenced for child destruction in Manchester, have still not been able to ascertain what happened to the baby.
Earlier this month, Manchester crown court found her guilty and yesterday she was handed a 12-month suspended sentence.
Detective Inspector Brian King from Greater Manchester Police told the BBC: "Throughout the course of the investigation, Maisha has consistently lied about what happened to her baby and has shown little remorse for what she did.
"We may never really know what happened to this child or Maisha's real reasons for doing what she did."
