Local government awards presented to Trafford and Bolton

Trafford and Bolton councils have received awards that recognise their commitment to strong local government.

Regional minister Beverley Hughes said that strong political leadership in Manchester is vital when it comes to modernising local government.

The North West Charter Awards were presented to both councils for supporting councillor development as they met the needs of their local communities.

Ms Hughes said: "I warmly congratulate the latest local authorities to have achieved recognition for elected member development by achieving Charter Status.

"The role of elected members is at the heart of the success of any local authority and their valuable contribution is recognised by this government."

Each award lasts three years and Salford City Council was one of first-ever councils to receive the charter.

A government select committed recently concluded that the Manchester city-region should have control over its budgets for regeneration, transport and skills, and have revenue-raising powers.
