M60 works to affect weekend drivers
11/02/2008
Drivers who use the M60 between Junction 19 and Junction 23 around Greater Manchester may have to make alternative plans for the next eight weekends.
The Highways Agency has confirmed that work to repair the surface of the orbital motorway is to start on February 29th.
Work will be carried out in the evenings and through the night, which means the M60 will be reduced to a single lane. During the day carriageways will be reduced to two lanes to enable the new road surfaces to cool.
Manuelle Salathe, Highways Agency project manager, said: "We continuously monitor the condition of our network and have discovered that work is needed to repair cracked areas on the M60.
"This work will also give us the opportunity to carry out investigative work of the road foundation layers.
A speed restriction of 50 mph will be imposed at all times during the weekends but this restriction will be lifted for the remainder of the eight weeks.
Last year's annual local authority road maintenance survey said that around one million potholes are filled every 12 months, costing £56 million.
