MP calls for new Manchester property laws
20/07/2006
Withington MP, John Leech, is urging the council to do what it can to stop south Manchester turning into a concrete jungle.
Aiming to make it more difficult for developers to build property on green land, Mr Leech is heading a group of local politicians trying to get planning laws changed, the South Manchester Reporter states.
The newspaper indicates that two more planning applications for West Didsbury, which would see green heritage sites lost to Manchester property, are currently being considered by the council.
According to the MP, the increase in Manchester property projects in the area has affected some of the city's local heritage sites.
Mr Leech told the South Manchester Reporter: "It's all a bit of a con. What we want to see is the redesignation of brown-field sites to green-field sites.
"At the moment, even if a small proportion of the green-field is developed the whole site becomes brown-field as was evidenced with the Christie Fields complex."
Parsonage Road, Withington, is one area south of the city that has recently developed its Manchester property portfolio, with new two, three and four-bedroom flats now available for rent.
