Man United boss hails fans

14/01/2008

The chief executive of Manchester United has described the football club's fan base as a "strong foundation" that will be vital to its continued success "for many years to come".

David Gill was speaking on Sky News after the club announced a record turnover of £245 million for 2006-07, an increase of 27 per cent on the previous financial year.

Mr Gill said Man United will always be one of the leading clubs and will strive to hold on its large fan base, whether its fortunes are up or down.

"It is not only having good revenue, it is having profitable revenue, because profitable revenue generates cash which we have re-invested back into the business in player contracts and player acquisitions," he stated.

Meanwhile, the dean of the Buckingham University's business school has argued Man United is one of the few clubs that operate like a "real business".

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Tom Cannon said many other clubs are amateurs when compared with Man United's business operations.
