Man charged after Rochdale hospital murder
15/08/2007
A 36-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a mental health patient in a mixed-sex mental health unit in Rochdale.
Telahum Tedola, of Birch Hill Hospital, has been charged with the murder of an unnamed 58-year-old female in-patient at the hospital on Monday.
The victim was found collapsed on a ward at about 18:00 BST and staff attempted to resuscitate her, but she later died at Rochdale Royal Infirmary.
Pennine Care Trust commented that the woman's death was "sudden and unexpected" and expressed its "sincere condolences to the family and carers of the deceased".
"The trust will continue to assist the police with their enquiries," remarked a spokesperson.
"Routine procedures will also be put in place to ensure that a thorough review is undertaken following this serious incident."
Mr Tedola is expected to appear at Rochdale magistrates court today to face the charge and a post-mortem examination of the victim is due to be carried out.
Birch Hill provides out-patient service for all ages and in-patient mental health services for adults and the elderly.
