Man dies in Canal Street rescue attempt
10/03/2008
A man has died after jumping into a canal in central Manchester to help another male who had fallen into the water.
The first man plunged 12 feet into the water on Canal Street near the junction with Chorlton Street, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
A second male, aged 45, jumped into the canal to help the first man who had hit his head on the embankment. However, the rescuer never resurfaced, reports the BBC.
Fire crews pulled the first man ashore but the dead body of the second male was found four hours later by police divers.
Anybody who was on Canal Street at around 02:30 GMT on Sunday is being asked by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) to make contact to help establish the course of events.
Yesterday, the GMP told the BBC that it was unclear what led to the incident.
Meanwhile, a 70-year-old pensioner has been charged with murder after a man, aged 25, died of a stab wound on Canal Street at the end of February.
