Manchester Airport lands top award
25/06/2008
Manchester Airport has landed the prestigious Best Airport Award 2008, which is presented each year by Airports Council International Europe.
The city's airport was named as the winner in the ten-to-25 million passenger category at a glitzy Paris bash earlier this week.
Judges enthused about Manchester's "simple, innovative approach to attracting airlines" and made special mention of its commitment to the environment. The airport will become carbon neutral by 2015.
The airport's community relations programme and its sponsorship of the arts were also looked on favourably by the judges.
It has been a great month for the airport, as it is celebrating its 70th birthday on June 25th.
Manchester Airport's managing director Andrew Cornish expressed his delight at scooping the honour as the airport has recently had to handle changes to security restrictions, investing £10 million in a new security screening area in Terminal 1 and over £2.2 million in new, state-of-the-art x-ray machines.
The airport today handles more than 22 million passengers a year, making it one of the UK's largest international airports.
