Manchester Airport noise concerns highlighted
19/12/2007
The government has promised to address the issue of noise pollution near Manchester Airport.
A map of major airports in England in line with the EU's Environmental Noise Directive has been drawn up by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
The map, which provide details of sound levels during the day and night, will be used to create action plans to address and reduce noise.
Environment minister Jonathan Shaw said: "Noise is an inescapable fact of modern life but we need to do what we can to manage it.
"A great deal has already been done to reduce noise from transport and industry but we need to build on and continue this work."
In 2005, the Department for Transport said Manchester Airport should consider compensation proposals in areas where traffic noise could not be reduced.
Figures released by the Civil Aviation Authority show that between 1990 and 2006, Manchester Airport saw passenger numbers rise from 10.1 million to 22.1 million.
