Manchester Airport targets 50 million passengers
06/07/2006
Manchester Airport is set to double its passenger figures over the next quarter of a century, new plans have revealed.
Long-haul flights will be central to the airport's development, including trips to America's west coast and Australia, reports the BBC.
It is hoped that the developments, which include increasing passenger numbers to 50 million, will have a beneficial effect on the north-west region as a whole.
Geoff Muirhead CBE, chief executive of the Manchester Airports Group, told the BBC: "Our airport is crucial to achieving the vision for Manchester's development as a city of national and international significance.
"New routes will bring jobs and investment, and open up new destinations for north-west travellers and businesses."
In addition, improvements to the airport could bring about positive regenerative effects on the surrounding area of Wythenshawe.
Current long-haul destinations that can be reached directly from Manchester Airport include Bangkok, Dubai and Goa.
