Manchester Airport temporarily shuts Runway 2

05/02/2008

News that Manchester Airport has lost its place as the fourth busiest in Britain and Ireland has not stopped airport managers closing one of its runways to allow for maintenance work.

Work on Runway 2 has been described as routine and will continue until the end of February.

Although all aircraft traffic will now have to use Runway 1, passengers should not face significant delays, according to airport managing director Andrew Cornish.

"We have chosen to do this during February - traditionally a quieter time before the summer period," he stated.

"We're firmly committed to maintaining our high levels of service to both passengers and airlines and are mindful of the impact on the community."

According to the Civil Aviation Authority, Manchester saw passenger numbers decline by 1.8 per in 2007.

In 2006, Stansted overtook Manchester as the third-largest airport in Britain.
