Manchester Airport updates fireworks ban
31/07/2008
Manchester Airport has drawn up new rules to limit the size of fireworks that can be set off near the hub in order to guarantee the safety of take-offs and landings.
Under the updates regulations, fireworks set off within five miles of the airport must fly no higher than 200 feet.
Those used within five to seven miles must not exceed 800 feet, while fireworks launched within a seven to ten mile radius must have a maximum altitude of 10,000 feet.
"Failure to comply with the guidelines outlined may result in a charge of endangering the safety of an aircraft," states the airport.
This charge carries a prison sentence of up to five years.
Many fireworks dispense canisters several hundred feet into the air. When used near an airport there is the possibility they could detonate near an aircraft and obscure the vision of pilots.
