Manchester City Council named top gay employer
10/01/2007
Manchester City Council has been named the top employer of gay and lesbian people in a poll published today.
The Stonewall Workplace Equality Index (WEI) of top 100 employers placed Manchester top of the list, closely followed by Brighton and Hove, Sheffield and Nottinghamshire.
Stonewall's report states that Manchester consults with the lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) communities on a range of activities, following a discussion day held in 2005.
Steve Mycio, deputy chief executive of Manchester City Council, commented: "Being able to benchmark our own performance against other organisations is invaluable to us.
"It provides us with evidence that we are a supportive and progressive employer and that we value our LGB staff."
He adds that the index confirms to the council that it is "delivering world class services" for those in the LGB community.
Manchester Pride is to take place between Friday 17th August and Monday 27th August this year, which is an annual festival celebrating the LGB and transgender community.
