Manchester MPs call for supercasino review
13/02/2007
As the debate over the supercasino license rumbles on, a number of Greater Manchester MPs have signed a House of Commons early day motion (EDM) calling for a review of the decision.
Barbara Keeley, Jim Dobbin and Mark Hunter, MPs for Worsley, Heywood and Cheadle respectively, have joined 63 signatories calling for a review, reports the Blackpool Gazette.
The MPs want the government to reconvene the scrutiny committee, which examined the draft gambling bill, to examine the decision before parliament votes on the Casino Advisory Panel's recommendations.
It is now two weeks since the panel recommended Manchester as the location for Britain's first Las Vegas-style gambling palace, but anger among Blackpool politicians has not ebbed.
Blackpool South MP Gordon Marsden told the newspaper that support from the Greater Manchester MPs proves that the Blackpool proposition "was a bid to benefit the whole of the north-west".
The likelihood of a supercasino arriving in the Beswick area of east Manchester has been welcomed by some residents as a harbinger of regeneration, while others have expressed concern about the possibilities of increased crime and addiction.
