Manchester Metrolink to extend
06/07/2006
Changes are to be made to the Manchester Metrolink system, including new and replacement lines, it has been announced.
Extensions of the Metrolink to Chorlton, Droylsden and Rochdale will soon get underway, after the government gave the redevelopments the go ahead.
In addition, the Bury to Altrincham line will have its track replaced, with eight new trams to begin operating from 2009.
Secretary of state for transport, Douglas Alexander, told the BBC: "The Metrolink matters to Manchester.
"To build on it is something that the Manchester travelling public want. We have been working closely with [Greater] Manchester Passenger Transport Executive [GMPTE] and the local authorities to deliver a tram that is value for passengers and the taxpayer."
A decision is yet to be made over the proposed Metrolink extensions to Manchester Airport, Ashton-under-Lyne and Wythenshawe.
Councillor Roger Jones, the chair of the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority, said: "This is fantastic news for Greater Manchester and I'd like to thank everyone who has given their support".
