Manchester Piccadilly 'a firm favourite with travellers'
02/08/2007
Manchester Piccadilly railway station has been voted the best of its kind in a new passenger poll, it has emerged.
A survey by a national rail consumer body of Britain's 20 busiest stations resulted in 92 per cent of travellers saying that Piccadilly is a favourable environment for passengers.
London's best entry was Liverpool Street, lagging behind Manchester Piccadilly at 74 per cent.
Anthony Smith, chief executive of Passenger Focus, which carried out the poll, said: "Passengers' ratings of Manchester Piccadilly station were head and shoulders above the national average of 60 per cent of passengers satisfied with their station's overall environment.
"These results show that passengers value the huge investment Network Rail has put into Manchester Piccadilly station and the fact that the station continues to be well run."
Since 1998, Network Rail has invested around £100 million in Piccadilly, which is used by more than 55,000 passengers every day.
Manchester Piccadilly, originally called London Road Station, was opened by the Manchester and Birmingham Railway company in 1842.
