Manchester University to launch China study centre

17/10/2006

The University of Manchester hopes to become a world leading research institution on modern China.

The launch of the Centre for Chinese Studies and Confucius Institute will be celebrated on October 18th in an event marking the second anniversary of the coming together of UMIST and the Victoria University of Manchester two years ago.

Professor Wang Gungwu, vice-chancellor of the University of Hong Kong between 1986 and 1995 and expert on China, will be speaking at the event.

The Chinese study centre will combine research from various university departments and will act as a platform for research into contemporary China.

Manchester City Council leader Sir Richard Leese welcomed the opening of the centre "as a further milestone in our growing relationship with China".

Researchers will concentrate on Chinese culture, language and society, the country's foreign policy and its place in the global context. The programme will offer degree programmes, as well as masters and PhD courses.

The director of the centre, Professor Hong Liu, said: "As the largest higher-learning institution in the UK, the University of Manchester is well positioned to study China and the Chinese-speaking world from inter-disciplinary and global perspectives.

"The Centre for Chinese Studies builds on a century old tradition of Chinese studies at the University of Manchester. This exciting endeavour is further bolstered by the city's dynamic, cosmopolitan, and multi-ethnic mosaic."
