Manchester awarded £2m to find public transport solution
07/11/2006
Authorities in Greater Manchester gained a welcome funding boost today as the government allocated nearly £2 million to look at strategic transport solutions for the city-region.
The Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA) and the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (Agma) have been awarded £1.95 million to look into a range of local transport options for the city as well as conduct planning exercises.
Lord Peter Smith of Agma said: "I am very pleased that Greater Manchester has today secured the largest funding allocation for any city-region."
Manchester's transport network will be reviewed and a comprehensive strategic plan developed with the money, which will allow the organisations to launch a major funding bid to the government's Transport Innovation Fund (TIF).
Greater Manchester is competing with ten other places for TIF funding to modernise its transport network.
Transport secretary Douglas Alexander has confirmed that all ten areas will be looking at congestion schemes and local road pricing as part of their planning.
By 2013, TIF funding of transport improvements across the UK is likely to be worth over £2 billion.
