Manchester bids for transport funding
31/05/2006
A "bold and innovative" bid for government funding has been submitted by Greater Manchester authorities.
The bid aims to gather funds that will improve the city's public transport and reduce congestion.
One of the key parts of Manchester's bid is a proposed integrated planning approach to transport, economic and land-use development across the 15 main transport corridors in Greater Manchester.
Lord Peter Smith, leader of the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities, said: "Our bid is bold and innovative in seeking funding to develop, over time, a toolkit of new measures to tackle congestion.
"At the same time, it makes clear that our public transport-led approach has proved very successful over the last few years in persuading people to leave their cars at home."
Manchester's transport bosses are aiming to tap into the government's Transport Innovation Fund, which aims to provide local authorities with £18 million to improve traffic.
