Manchester bomb, ten years on
06/06/2006
A service is being planned by Manchester Cathedral to mark next week's tenth anniversary of the IRA bomb attack on the city.
Aiming to unite the city in remembrance of the explosion, the service will include songs, as well as thanking the spirit of the Manchester people, reports the BBC.
The bomb, which exploded on June 15th 1996, caused widespread damage to the city centre and injured 206 people.
Part of the Arndale Shopping Centre and the cathedral itself were affected by the bomb, as well as many of the other buildings in the vicinity.
However, due to a quick-fire evacuation process - whereby police had 40 minutes warning to clear the area - no-one was killed in the blast.
The Dean of Manchester Cathedral, the Very Reverend Rogers Govender, told the BBC: "The bomb was not good for Manchester, but I think the people of the city have ensured something good has come out of it."
People can join the service, which takes place at Manchester Cathedral on June 15th at 11:00 BST.
