Manchester builds no smoking awareness
05/06/2007
Manchester City Council has announced the launch of a new campaign to improve awareness of smoke free legislation in England.
From July 1st, government legislation prohibiting smoking in public places in England comes into force, bringing the country in line with similar rules in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
In preparation for the ban, Manchester City Council has been working with local businesses to take a proactive approach to compliance and raise awareness across the city of the implications of the new laws.
Businesses and their customers across Manchester are being provided with education, advice and support to help them comply with the new legislation and promote a smoke free environment.
Manchester City Council executive member for adult social care and health Basil Curley said: "More than 18,000 information leaflets have been sent out to businesses, one to one meetings are taking place and a telephone survey of more than 6,000 businesses has taken place to gauge business awareness of the forthcoming changes."
Non profit rail operator Network Rail has also announced that smoking will be banned from all concourses and ticket halls, as well as on covered and uncovered platforms, in retail and food outlets and on footbridges across the 1,900 railway stations in England from July.
