Manchester businesses 'affected by poor electricity supply'
07/04/2008
Businesses in Manchester are apparently unable to fulfil all their IT needs due to a poor distribution of electricity in the city.
According to Crain's Manchester Business magazine, companies are struggling to find locations that meet the increasing demand for electricity.
In fact, the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities has asked Manchester Enterprises to find ways of overhauling the city's electricity distribution infrastructure.
John Steward, head of planning at Manchester Enterprises, told the publication: "We believe it is having an effect on Manchester's growth. We believe the study will confirm that.
"There is anecdotal evidence that it is happening. We believe it's having a slowing effect on the economy."
Experts believe there is enough power in the system but that a sub-standard distribution network is causing the problems. Both Trafford and Hulme have been identified as two areas where the shortage is acute.
According to Manchester Enterprises, new sub-stations need to be built in central Manchester.
The problem is not a new development, nor is it confined to Manchester. Complaints about a lack of power were raised in 2006. London's Docklands and other congested areas have also had their fair share of power supply problems, according to Computing.co.uk.
