Manchester celebrates Israel's 60th birthday
30/06/2008
Manchester celebrated the creation of the modern state of Israel yesterday (June 29th).
The Salute to Israel parade - a staple event in New York's calendar - was held in Manchester and London for the first time.
This year, the parade focused on the 60th anniversary of the creation of Israel and was followed by a grand finale and family celebrations in Heaton Park.
The parade itself featured a procession featuring floats, bands and marchers, representing all parts of Britain's Jewish community.
Speaking before the event, a spokesperson commented: "The Salute to Israel Parade will be a public celebration of the 60th anniversary and will demonstrate affirmation of solidarity with and support of Israel."
Supporters of the parade included the Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester, the Movement for Reform Judaism and the Manchester Zionist Central Council.
Meanwhile, Israel has opened crossings into the Gaza Strip, allowing trucks carrying food and medical supplies to enter the territory.
