Manchester chosen in supercasino bid
30/01/2007
Manchester looks set to host the UK's first supercasino, beating Blackpool and London's Millennium Dome as the bookie's favourites.
In its final report, the Casino Advisory Panel has told the government that Manchester is the best place to create a licensed regional casino.
The Department of Culture, Media and Sport will consider the panel's recommendation, although it is highly unlikely that the government will dispute the decision. MPs will then vote on the government's choice, as well as the location of smaller casinos around the country.
Professor Stephen Crow, chair of the panel, said the decision-makers were won over by how well the Manchester proposal "delivered against the full range of requirements set out in the criteria against which the judgments were made".
He said the panel was "particularly impressed" by Manchester's proposal and remarked that the city represented "a good place to test social impact" of the supercasino.
Another factor in the panel's decision was the city's need for further regeneration, especially as it is one of the government's eight core cities, which are drivers of regional and national economic growth.
