Manchester city council disappointed with supercasino decision
27/02/2008
Manchester city council has reacted with disappointment to the government's decision not to go ahead with the supercasino in the city.
Leader of the council Sir Richard Leese suggested that the body will continue to pursue the matter as he feels that a supercasino would bring a number of benefits to the east Manchester area.
Discussing the matter further, Angie Robinson, chief executive of Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, highlighted how nothing specific had been mentioned about compensating the city for its loss.
"This is not good news for Manchester," she told the BBC. "A ministerial group is to be set up to help Manchester but from the business community's point of view, we only hope that this won't be just another talking shop."
The decision was made to scrap the casino plans in the north-west city following a government review.
Tony Lloyd, Labour MP for Manchester Central, called the final verdict "bonkers" and indicated that it is a disappointment to his constituents.
