Manchester congestion to be tackled
20/08/2007
A government agency has announced it is examining ways to reduce congestion in Manchester.
The Highways Agency will investigate the causes of congestion and will help to provide solutions to make drivers' journeys less stressful.
Proposals include carrying out roadworks at night to avoid peak times, clearing incidents as soon as possible and improving communications so that road users are better informed about diversions.
Roy Wood, area performance manager, said: "It is important for drivers to realise that the Highways Agency is working hard behind the scenes to tackle congestion.
"Our Traffic Officer Service is playing a big part in tackling incidents but we also have a role in investigating the causes of congestion and taking other steps to address it."
The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities believes that introducing a congestion charge on the region's roads is the best way to solve the problem.
Under current proposals, peak-time drivers will pay £2 to enter the outer ring of Manchester, via the M60, and £1 to enter the city centre.
Another £1 would be levied when leaving each of the congestion zones.
