Manchester gears up for World Sport 08
16/01/2008
Following the successful 2002 Commonwealth Games, Manchester has fired the starting gun for a new round of sporting activities.
The city has been chosen to host World Sport 08, which will begin in March with the UCI Track Cycling World Championship at the Manchester Velodrome.
Other events include the ninth FINA World Swimming Championships, Paralympic sports, Hi-Tec World Squash Championships, the UEFA Cup Final and the BUPA Great Manchester Run.
Reigning World Open Squash champion Nicol David said: "It's an exciting opportunity for Manchester to showcase its sporting qualities on a global scale and I'm really looking forward to competing in the city again.
"I've spent a lot of time in Manchester and at the National Squash Centre at Sportcity, which is a fantastic sports venue, not just for my sport but for athletics, cycling and football in particular."
Since 2002, Manchester has strengthened its sporting infrastructure and has created the UK's largest sports programme under the auspices of Manchester Leisure Sports Development.
