Manchester 'has best passenger transport'
21/07/2006
Greater Manchester Public Transport Authority (GMPTA) is the passenger transport authority of the year, it has emerged.
Receiving the award at the National Transport Awards, the organisation indicated that it was delighted to be "recognised by [its] peers".
The awards, held in association with Local Transport Planning Network and Transport Times, highlight transport initiatives and successful authorities around the country.
Chair of GMPTA, councillor Roger Jones, who was presented with the prize, said: "I am honoured to receive this award on behalf of GMPTA.
"Greater Manchester has always led the transport agenda and the last year has been an exceptionally busy one for us."
He added: "We are working with our partners to deliver a safe, environmentally friendly public transport network that is easy to understand and use. The growth we are seeing in bus, rail and tram use is testament to the hard work of all involved.
This month, Manchester was given permission to extend its Metrolink to more destinations outside the city centre, which will provide a further transport boost to the city's residents.
