Manchester is 'cost-effective' for students
07/08/2006
Manchester is one of the top five most cost-effective areas for students, according to new research.
Taking into account low-living costs, rent prices and part-time job income, Manchester is seen as a financially viable city to study in, the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) student living index suggests.
Cardiff, Leeds, Coventry and St Andrews, Scotland, are the only other university destinations that are more cost-effective, the index reveals.
RBS indicates that the average Manchester student will spend less money per week than the average university-goer in Belfast, Edinburgh and London, as well as 18 other towns and cities in the UK.
Paul Jeffrey, head of student banking at RBS, says: "For many students, heading off to university is the first time that they will live away from their parents.
"According to our research over half (52 per cent) of students underestimate the amount they need to spend on rent and living costs."
University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan students are live across the city, but a higher percentage find accommodation in south Manchester.
