28/04/2008
Midas, Manchester's inward investment agency, helped create 3,110 new jobs in the city-region during the 2007-08 financial year, it has been revealed.
Among the companies that have created jobs in Greater Manchester over the past 12 months are Sainsbury's, Arista Insurance, and international banking firms Handelsbanken and Macquarie.
Midas also claims to have played a key role in ensuring that 1,532 jobs were safeguarded in the most recent financial year at organisations such as IBM, Swinton Insurance and Opal Telecom.
Steven Broomhead, chief executive of the Northwest Regional Development Agency, praised Midas' role in attracting international investment projects to Greater Manchester.
"Its contribution to the continued success of the northwest economy should not be overlooked," he asserted.
Last week, it was confirmed that world-leading asset management company the Bank of New York was opening a second office in the city centre.
An employer of hundreds of people in the city, the bank has just signed an agreement to take on an extra 50,000 sq ft of office space at Spinningfields to augment its office in Piccadilly.
Jackie Williams, the bank's managing director, said: "The availability of talented individuals has allowed us to quickly build an 800-strong highly motivated and committed team."
