Manchester living comes out on top
16/08/2006
Manchester is the second best city in the UK after London, according to a new survey into the cost of living.
The results of the YouGov poll, which was carried out for Combined Insurance, revealed that, on average, people in Manchester spend 75 per cent of their monthly wage on outgoings, compared to 88 per cent in Leeds and 93 per cent in Edinburgh.
Analysing the average income against outgoings such as rent, utility bills and debt repayments, the survey of 2,000 people nationwide found that Cardiff is now the most expensive place to live in the UK, with folk in the Welsh capital paying out 97 per cent of their wages on bills.
Nigel Brittle, of Combined Insurance, said: "These findings call into question the long-held belief that London is the UK cost capital with an exorbitant cost of living.
"When monthly income is taken into account and all monthly commitments are totted up - not just mortgages - it's clear there are residents in other parts of the UK that are living closer to the financial edge."
London was found to be bottom of the major city list, with those living in the capital forking out just 73 per cent of their monthly income on living costs and debts.
