Manchester locals urged to dig their communities
02/11/2006
Archaeologists from across the world are coming to Manchester to urge the public to become involved in community archaeology.
The University of Manchester will host the gathering, which will also include politicians and community activists.
Titled Archaeology For All, the two-day conference aims to encourage members of the public to take part in digs in the Manchester area.
Norman Redhead, who works at the university's archaeological unit, said: "The University of Manchester is one of the national leaders in taking the idea of community archaeology forwards.
"Professional archaeologists from the unit have developed the special skills needed to run complex community excavations and provide training, in tandem with local people and organisations."
According to the university, archaeologists hope that community digs will enable people to gain a sense of who they are and their place in history.
They also believe that digs provide the opportunity for people from different ages and backgrounds to interact on a social level.
