Manchester lord mayor is elected
12/10/2006
It has emerged that a new lord mayor of Manchester has been elected.
Councillor David Sandiford was elected as lord mayor at a council meeting on October 11th.
Mr Sandiford was first elected as a Liberal Democrat councillor for Withington in 1979 and has been east Didsbury councillor since 1999.
Councillor Sandiford, who is a founding editor of Manchester Physics Series of university textbooks, said he was delighted to take office as lord mayor.
"I look forward to representing this great city and its residents and to meeting people of all ages and backgrounds from Manchester," he stated.
He said that he wanted to find out how the young people of Manchester could be encouraged to go into training or teaching.
"I hope to spend my term of office as Lord Mayor paying especial attention to our schools and colleges that are so crucial in ensuring that our young people get the best possible start in life."
Councillor Sandiford takes over the role following the recent death of councillor James Ashley, who was the city's previous mayor.
