Manchester music festival lives on
03/07/2006
Manchester's free music festival, Dpercussion, will go ahead this summer, after fears that lack of funding would prevent it from doing so.
Sponsorship support has materialised and the event, which in the past has starred Badly Drawn Boy and Snow Patrol, will take place on Saturday August 5th.
Acts to confirm for this year's musical extravaganza include the Pipettes, Polytechnic and the Whip, who will help continue the event that began in 1997.
The festival began in the wake of the IRA bomb in 1996, as a positive response to the attack on Manchester.
According to the Dpercussion's organisers, events agency To the Ground, the festival attracts 50,000 people to its Castlefield venue each year.
Last week, To the Ground reported that this year's Dpercussion was cancelled because two of its local partners had pulled out.
Creative director at the agency, Steve Smith, said in a statement that it was "terrible that ten years after the bomb, one of its most successful and positive responses is not being backed by the private sector".
