Manchester on super-casino shortlist
24/05/2006
Manchester has been chosen as one of eight potential venues for the UK's first super-casino.
The Casino Advisory Panel made their announcement today, but only one of the named venues will be chosen to build the Las Vegas-style complex at the end of 2006.
Manchester joined Blackpool, Brent, Cardiff, Glasgow, Newcastle, Greenwich and Sheffield on the shortlist, with the panel's final decision expected to be announced by December.
Manchester City Council plans to build the city's super-casino at the Sportcity area, which would create 2,700 new jobs.
On submitting the bid at the end of March, Councillor Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, said: "We know we have a very strong case.
"If there is to be one pilot regional casino scheme it must be in Manchester. We believe the proposed site at Sportcity in east Manchester offers a robust test bed for the successful implementation of an, as yet, untested concept in the UK."
Local authorities that did not make the shortlist include, Leeds, Southampton and Newport.
