Manchester police to patrol on three wheels?
21/06/2007
Police in Greater Manchester could soon be patrolling the streets on three-wheeled electric scooters known as T3 personal mobility vehicles.
Launched at the Association of Chief Police Officers' annual conference in Manchester, the T3 will enable police patrols to cover more ground, although it is not designed for road use.
With a maximum speed of 25 mph and a range of up to 30 miles, the street scooters are kitted out with red and blue flashing lights and a police siren.
T3 Motion managing director Noel Cherowbrier said: "It's very much in-your-face and certainly has the wow factor, so people do remember it.
"More people will get to see a police officer on his or her patrol because the vehicle has a range of 25 to 30 miles on one charge."
Several forces, including Greater Manchester Police, have expressed an interest in the vehicles, which are already popular in the US.
Although the T3 comes with a price-tag of £4,000, daily running costs amount to a negligible 20 pence per day.
